Senior Research Chemist at PPG INDUSTRIES INC in Burbank, California

Job Description:

As a Senior Research Chemist , you will be responsible for advancing the development, process and commercialization of aerospace sealants and adhesives products. In this position, you will need to have good understanding of formulation-property relationship, to design and develop products that can meet various customer specification requirements robustly.

Key Responsibilities :

• Lead and manage projects to design, formulate, and test sealants and adhesives that meet customer requirements and are based on a deep understanding of chemistry and interactions.


• Resolve technical challenges and drive breakthroughs through scientific and statistical methodologies.


• Monitor the technology landscape, including the patent landscape, and generate new patents.


• Manage project timelines and deliverables, including project management, capturing updates, meeting internally and externally, and reporting.


• Collaborate with external universities and companies to advance technology and develop new products.


• Spend approximately 70% of time on product development, including formulation and testing, and 30% on collaboration and technology development.


• Supervise and mentor junior team members to execute on design, including formulation and testing.

Qualifications :

• A Ph.D in Organic or Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science is required.


• 3+ years of experience in the field of sealants, adhesives, composites, or coatings is required.


• The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the interactions between organic and inorganic components in composite materials, as well as the ability to engineer and design these materials to meet customer requirements.


• A background in Organic Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry is particularly relevant for this position, as most sealants are composite materials with organic components and inorganic fillers. However, candidates with backgrounds in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Polymer Science may also be a good fit based on their knowledge of the properties and interactions of these materials.


• Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
