POSITION TITLE: Director of First-Generation Student Initiatives


REPORTS TO: Dean of Students


POSITION SUMMARY: Eureka College aims to become a model for First Generation Student Success, and this new and exciting position will be integral to obtaining this goal. Currently, Eureka College enrolls approximately 50% of students who identify as being First Generation, defined institutionally as students who will become first in their families to obtain their four-year degree. As an initially grant funded position, the Director of First-Generation Student Initiatives will provide leadership in creating innovative college-wide programming and academic supports to expand success and increase graduation rates for first-generation students at Eureka College. The Director will be responsible for the development and leadership of a new Pre-College program and a new Peer Mentor program to support first-generation student success. This new position will be responsible for expanding, assessing, and improving the college's First-Generation Initiative to close the achievement gap for first-generation students.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Lead the college's First-Generation Initiative in partnership with key campus stakeholders.

  • Facilitate the development, design, and implementation of a new Pre-College program targeting incoming First-Generation students.

  • Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to market, evaluate, and continually enhance the Pre-College program.

  • Supervise the development, implementation, and assessment of a new Peer Mentor program with a focus on increasing retention and academic success of program participants.

  • Recruit, train, and evaluate peer mentors serving within the Peer Mentor program.

  • Explore the development of cohort-based student support for all levels of First-Generation students.

  • Create and facilitate professional development on first-generation student success for the Eureka College community.

  • Lead efforts to obtain First Generation Forward distinction through serving as point of contact for the First Scholars Network.

  • Administer budget for First Generation Initiatives.

  • Supervise the development and administration of a new Pre-College program focused on incoming first year, First-Generation and low-income students.

  • Provide oversight of the student employee experience within the First-Generation Initiative.




EDUCATION:

Essential: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university

Desirable: Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Social Work, Counseling, or Related Field


EXPERIENCE:

Essential: 1-3 years' experience working with college aged, first generation, and/or studying and understanding the unique experiences, challenges, and opportunities related to first generation students and Student Affairs.

Desirable: 3+ years serving in a leadership role in Student Affairs focusing on retention-related initiatives on a college campus.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:


  • Passionate about success of First-Generation college students

  • Exemplary public speaking skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Skilled in crisis management, conflict resolution and problem solving

  • Ability to work with diverse groups of students

  • Demonstrated commitment to educational excellence

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and electronic mail

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.


WORK SCHEDULE:

Normal workdays are scheduled Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 5:00 PM with one hour allocated for lunch. Due to the nature of this position, flexibility in work schedule is needed to allow for periodic evening and weekend hours.
