Job Description:

General Summary & Essential Responsibilities

Performs specialized public safety work at swimming facilities in prevention of aquatic emergencies. Work includes maintaining safe swimming conditions, enforcing established rules and regulations, and rescuing those who are in distress.  Duties also include maintaining the quality of swimming pool water and appearance of pool facilities or beach area as required.  Instructions and preliminary training are provided by a supervisor, after which the employee is expected to fulfill daily duty assignments and follow the established procedures, rules, and regulations with minimum assistance.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Monitors the activities of swimmers in and around the swimming pool; enforces all pool rules and regulations and water safety policies and practices; and informs beach patrons of unsafe or hazardous swimming conditions. 
  • Prepares and conducts aquatic programming including water exercise classes, and swim lessons; plans and conducts aquatics programs as assigned; develops lesson plans; promotes programs and events; obtains marketing materials and sponsorships; distributes and collects program surveys; prepares and submits course records and survey summaries; and obtains program equipment and supplies.  
  • Responds to any and all emergency situations; rescues swimmers in distress utilizing appropriate rescue techniques; administers first aid and/or CPR, Auto External Defibrillator, and oxygen administration following appropriate medical protocol; and calls for emergency assistance when necessary. 
  • Maintains inventory of first aid and rescue equipment and supplies; conducts daily opening, closing and facility safety inspection checklists; and replenishes or replaces supplies and equipment as needed. 
  • Assists in maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of aquatic facilities including pool, deck, offices, storage rooms, pump rooms and restrooms; conducts water quality testing; monitors water quality to ensure compliance with established water quality standards;  adjusts chemicals as needed; and maintains work areas gathering trash, spraying decks, cleaning restrooms, etc.  
  • Performs cashier services; receives payment for daily admission, program registration, and season passes; makes change; issues receipts; credits accounts; and maintains all related documentation. 
  • Prepares written reports on accidents, incidents, first aid, etc.; completes other reports or records as required. 
  • Performs basic administrative duties including written reports, memorandums, interaction with others, and communication through telephone and meetings. 
  • Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.

 

 

Min. Education, Licenses and Certifications

Education and Experience:

  • Six months of experience in lifeguarding or aquatic instruction field.

Special Qualifications:

  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years old. 
  • Must possess and maintain the following certifications: 
    1. CPR/AED certification for Professional Rescuers
    2. Standard First Aid
    3. American Red Cross Lifeguard or nationally recognized equivalent.  
  • Within six (6) months of position assignment:
    1. Must obtain and maintain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications.
  • Knowledge of local and State water safety rules and regulations, and pertinent rules, regulations, and County ordinances. 
  • Knowledge of rescue methods and first aid as applies to accidents in the water and surrounding areas, including CPR and Auto External Defibrillator and oxygen administration. 
  • Knowledge of common swimming pool chemicals including water quality testing reagents. 
  • Skill in swimming, water rescues, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and first aid. 
  • Ability to be proactive in regard to safety precautions, to recognize emergencies, and to take appropriate action. 
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. 
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems. 
  • Ability to prepare effective correspondence on routine matters and to perform routine administrative functions without referral to supervisor. 
  • Ability to handle distressed swimmers and patrons in a professional manner. 
  • Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, in English. 
  • Ability to maintain good physical condition and sufficient strength to control struggling adult swimmers. 
  • Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication. 
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public.

 

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Walking, pulling, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, depth perception, climbing, swimming. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Good physical condition and sufficient strength to control struggling adult swimmers. 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights, and/or dust.
RISK/SAFETY CONDITIONS
The position requires exposure to some risk related to physical and/or mental health and safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, assault and battery, communicable disease, etc.).
