Job Description:

The Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) in the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University (The State University of New York at Binghamton) invites applications for one faculty member, at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, starting in Spring or Fall 2024. The position involves establishing theoretical and applied research in emerging areas in systems science as well as teaching at all levels from undergraduate courses to advanced graduate courses.

The Assistant Professor we are looking for is sought to start in Spring or Fall 2024 and will have advanced expertise in areas such as 1) Computational Social Science/Biomedical Complexity/Epidemiology and 2) Systems Science/Complex Systems/Network Science. Complex systems science has been particularly successful in building actionable models in social, organizational, and biomedical complexity, which leverage ML/AI/Statistical Inference but add explainability to the management of complex problems. It is expected that candidates applying for this role will pursue much broader applications including, but not limited to, Social Science/Networks, Organizational Science/Networks and Design, Biology, Medicine, and Mental/Public Health Modeling. Alternatively, the faculty candidate will pursue newer topics such as Complex Systems, Network Science, Network Design, or other emerging topics in the broader discipline of Systems Science. Candidates with experience in the broad area of computational intelligence are preferred. Qualified applicants in other emerging areas of the system science discipline may be considered.

Attracting $8.5-12 million annually in research funding from 2020-2023, our established faculty works collaboratively with over 30 sponsors from industry and federal agencies. At this level of research productivity, the SSIE Department is also ranked the highest on-campus in research expenditures. With an excellent and growing academic reputation, the SSIE Department is internationally renowned in areas such as systems science, health systems engineering, advanced data science/analytics, and electronics manufacturing/packaging and flexible electronics arenas, and health systems engineering, to name a few. The department currently has thirty-three (33) faculty members and offers a BS degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), MS degrees in Systems Science (SS), Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), and Healthcare Systems Engineering (HSE), and PhD degrees in Systems Science (SS) and Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE). SSIE also offers a cutting-edge executive health systems program in Manhattan. With about 250 undergraduate, 200 masters, and 200 doctoral students, the department is growing in numbers and in reputation.

The successful candidate will have a tenure berth in the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering.

Requirements:

The candidate must have a doctoral degree in Systems Science, Complex Systems, Network Science, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field. The candidate should also have good leadership skills and should have an excellent record of scholarly publications. Teaching experience is also preferred.

The candidate is expected to have high potential to initiate and sustain an externally funded multi-disciplinary research program and to take a major role in advancing the research and academic mission of the SSIE Department.

The positions require advanced expertise and scholarship record in one of the following broad areas of 1) Computational Social Science/Biomedical Complexity/Epidemiology and 2) Systems Science/Complex Systems/Network Science.
