Lays out, fabricates, assembles, erects, or makes repairs for all types of structural and plate work; performs all kind of welding; dismantles, erects, or moves heavy equipment and structures in plant maintenance or construction.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Machines and hand tools common to the trade, fixtures, shields, guards, cables, chains, block and tackle, gin poles, jacks, timber, skids, scaffolding, staging, ladders, tractor, flat bed trucks, radio and pendant cranes, mobile cranes, manlifts, blueprints, sketches, etc.

MATERIAL

Steel plates, structural shapes, structural steel sections, fabricated structures, pressure vessels, forgings, castings, spare parts, housings, electrical and mechanical equipment, ferrous and non-ferrous materials, welding and brazing rod, rivets, bolts, tubing, flux, gases, etc.

SOURCE OF SUPERVISION

Foreman or immediate supervisor. Performs work with a minimum of direction.

DIRECTION EXERCISED

Work alone or directs other workers as required.

WORKING PROCEDURE

  • Receives instructions and drawings regarding shop and field work assignments.
  • Interprets drawings and sketches, plan working procedure, and determines the materials, tools, and equipment required for the job.
  • Handles and/or make arrangements for the handling of materials, tools, and equipment to and from the job site in the shop or in the field.
  • Makes layout for structural assemblies, plate work and miscellaneous fabrication.
  • Operates shop machines such as drill press, bending roll, plate shear, punch press, burning machines, etc., to fabricate parts.
  • Fits tack welds, bolts, fasten or rivets fabricated parts, structural assemblies and plate work using the proper hand and portable power tools.
  • Inspects jobs for repairs and replacements; makes field sketches and measurements.
  • Dismantles, installs, repairs and erects fabricated parts and structural assemblies and performs any type of pressure vessel work requiring "tight fit" fabrication.
  • Installs and repairs roofs and building sidings using various materials.
  • Performs work requiring knowledge of the welding properties of various types of metal, welding rods, welding heat, stress relief, allowances for fit-up and machining and the effect of shrinkage, warpage, and expansion.
  • Sets up, assembles, cleans, and prepares item to be welded,
  • Performs all kinds of welding, brazing, and cutting on any type of metal. Preheats, post-heats, and flame anneals parts and welds. Cleans and chips or grinds parts and welds. Build up worn or defective surfaces.
  • Uses burning torch to dismantle assemblies and cut material to size and shape.
  • Performs difficult rigging on heavy and unbalanced loads involving the use of gin poles, booms, hoists, chain falls, jacks, etc. Inspects job site and equipment to be dismantles, erected, or moved and refers to drawings to determine the best working procedure. Directs the handling and/or hooks and unhooks materials and equipment.
  • Erects scaffolds and rigging equipment and splices cables. Loads and unloads heavy or bulky machinery, equipment, fabricated structural members, spare parrs, castings, etc. moves, sets in place, erects, assembles, or dismantles machinery and equipment such as stationary engines, generators, turbines, cranes, tanks, boilers, structural steel sections or fabricated members, etc.
  • Operates cranes and mobile equipment as required.
  • Maintains good housekeeping practices in work area.
