The Department of Exercise and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin September 1, 2024.

The Department of Exercise and Health Sciences (https://www.umb.edu/nursing-health-sciences/about/exercise-health-sciences/) is one of the fastest growing departments on campus, offering a bachelor's, both an accelerated master's and a traditional master's, and doctoral degrees with options to focus on Applied Exercise Physiology or Physical Activity and Health Promotion. Faculty in the department are actively engaged in research and have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, Veteran's Administration, and various other external funding agencies. The faculty's broad research expertise ranges from the cellular level to community and population studies. Faculty in applied exercise physiology focuses on biological mechanisms in adaptations to exercise; neurovascular mechanisms in response to stressors; and biological and neurophysiological mechanisms in obesity and chronic diseases. Faculty in health promotion and disease prevention focus on determinants and intervention research with special populations such as physical activity promotion in older adults, people of color who are cancer survivors, children with special needs, and Latinx and immigrant populations.

Responsibilities for this tenure-track position include developing or continuing to conduct an independent extramurally funded research program to achieve national and international recognition and teaching across the curriculum. Potential candidates ideally should have research and teaching expertise in areas related to physical activity measurement and behavioral intervention/health promotion, and/or epidemiology specifically within minoritized populations. Candidates will be expected to maintain a program of research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and advise and mentor students. Other responsibilities include committee service and/or leadership at departmental, college and/or university levels. Candidates should have experience working with a diverse faculty/staff, student, and educational environment and be committed to support our goal of ensuring an inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace.

UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country - more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome. We invite applications from candidates who engage the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators.

Application instructions:

Candidates must have 1) an earned doctorate in kinesiology, exercise science, behavioral science, or related areas by the start of the appointment; post-doctoral experience is highly preferred; 2) a publication record in peer-reviewed journals; 3) success or promise in obtaining extramural funding; and 4) university-level teaching experience.

To apply, please submit 1) a letter of interest, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) statement of research plan, 4) a teaching statement, 5) names and contact information for three references, and 6) three peer-reviewed, published papers

For questions, please contact Dr. Azizah J. Jor'dan at azizah.jordan@umb.edu. Review of applicants will begin December 1, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.

UMass Boston is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, we will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations for the hiring process. If reasonable accommodation is needed, please contact HRDirect@umb.edu or 617-287-5150.
