Patient Preparation:
- Pre-Procedure: Cardiac Cath Lab Nurses prepare patients for catheterization procedures. This involves assessing their health status, reviewing medical records, and ensuring they are adequately informed about the procedure.
- Post-Procedure: After the catheterization, nurses continue to monitor patients, ensuring their stability and recovery. They manage any post-procedure complications and provide necessary care.
Assisting Cardiologists:
- During catheterization procedures, Cardiac Cath Lab Nurses assist cardiologists. They help with stent implants, cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, and other diagnostic tests related to heart disease.
They operate and maintain facility equipment, ensuring accurate imaging during the procedure.
In complex cases, cardiovascular technologists may also assist with specialized interventions.
Emergency Response:
- Cardiac Cath Lab Nurses are often the first responders if a patient experiences a heart attack or other cardiac emergencies.
- Their quick thinking and expertise are critical in managing urgent situations.
Imaging and Diagnosis:
- The Cardiac Cath Lab provides detailed imaging of a patient's heart arteries. It ensures adequate blood flow throughout the body and identifies blockages or arterial damage.
- Nurses collaborate with the medical team to interpret imaging results and plan further interventions if needed.
Educational Requirements:
- Licensure: Candidates must have an active RN license and have passed the NCLEX-RN exam.
- Experience: Work experience shadowing a cardiologist or in the Cardiac Cath Lab is beneficial.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is highly recommended.
