Overview

The Carpenter Shop Apprentice is a member of Facilities Operations and possesses a basic understanding of the carpentry trade and has the ability to make minor repairs and modifications to buildings and furnishings. Performs assigned duties under direction of supervision, lead technicians and journey level carpenters.

This structured apprenticeship program consists of four years of on the job training combined with four years classroom instruction at an approved vocational-technical school (2-3 events/week, during the academic year).



Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following, and other duties may be assigned:

  • As directed, the Apprentice effectively and safely performs a wide range of carpentry tasks, including the repair, renovation, and maintenance of campus buildings and structures, in accordance with the apprenticeship on-the-job training requirements.
  • Observes University safety regulations, uses appropriate personal protective equipment, and performs all assigned work tasks in a safe manner. Ensures proper care in the safe use and maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Supplements practical trade experience by attending vocational / technical trade school during non-business hours, following the defined program of apprenticeship related educational and instructional courses.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with co-workers and management, both verbally and in writing. Maintains and accurate log of daily tasks and effectively utilizes the departmental computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
  • Performs additional assignments which may include overtime, after hours, and special events. Available for emergency call-backs as necessary.
  • Follows and abides by the department’s customer service standards.
  • When snowstorms occur, the apprentice is an “Essential Employee” who is mandated to assist in the removal of snow and the de-icing of campus walks and steps.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or possess an equivalency (GED).
  • Ability to perform all essential duties in a satisfactory manner.
  • Possess entry level skills, and the ability and aptitude to learn the carpentry trade.
  • Must possess a clear understanding of the potential occupational hazards connected with carpentry work and the associated safety standards and practices which must be applied.
  • Ability to work with supervision and guidance, across the range of trade skills normally encountered by the carpentry trade in a variety of facilities.
  • Must be able to successfully complete all educational and on-the-job requirements of the apprenticeship program.
  • Ability to safely and effectively work with general types of carpentry trade hand and power tools such as table saws, miter box saws, planers, joiners, shapers, routers, band saws, nailing guns, hammers, levels, etc.
  • Possess a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills; work independently and in teams. Possess a willingness to learn all aspects of the carpentry trade.
  • Must be a self-starter with initiative to understand and learn.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements listed below.

Physical Demands: The following are tasks and skills that would be necessary for any person to fulfill while working as an apprentice. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • stand or walk up to 2 hours at one time for 6-8 hours per day;
  • sit for less than 2 hours during an 8-hour day;
  • operates a motor vehicle or heavy equipment (e.g., forklift, high reach, cherry picker) occasionally (less than 33% of the workday);
  • lift or carry up to 50 pounds frequently (34 – 66% of the workday) and up to 100 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday);
  • lift up to 50 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead and up to 100 pounds to waist height;
  • use hands for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling frequently (34 – 66% of the workday);
  • occasionally push or pull with forces up to 100 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, lie down, crawl, knee stand, dig, or use hammer drills (up to 33% of the workday);
  • frequently push or pull with forces up to 50 pounds, climb stairs and ladders, or reach overhead (34 – 66% of the workday);
  • work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions;
  • possess ability to work at heights, with physical agility and a full range of motion, while maintaining balance.
