Applicants with a bachelor's degree in engineering will be hired at the Engineer level - $29.977 per hour. Licensed Professional Engineer applicants will be hired at the Professional Engineer I level - $34.173 per hour. Pay rate is commensurate with education and experience, if approved.

Job Duties:
- Act as survey party personnel or survey party chief on preliminary and construction surveys.
- Act as an inspector or lead inspector on various heavy highway construction operations such as grading, culvert, bridge, asphalt, concrete paving, erosion control, wetland mitigation, etc.
- Coordinate engineering and construction schedules with contractors, landowners, utilities, etc.
- Prepare and maintain complete and accurate records of materials tested and used, work performed, verify compliance to special provisions, plans, specifications and estimates.
- Read and interpret special provisions, plans, specifications, estimates, standards, manuals, procedures, and other related materials to solve highway construction problems.
- Verify and redesign plans as necessary to fit field conditions.
- Supervise and train other employees as necessary Perform limited project manager duties in their absence.
- As necessary, meet with interested parties including landowners, utilities, businesses, and interested public affected by highway construction projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- On-the-job and formal training will be provided.



Requirements / Qualifications:




Minimum Qualifications:



Engineer: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. This position requires passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam within one year of employment. Promotion to a Professional Engineer is contingent on successfully completing the degree and/or training requirements.


Professional Engineer I: Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at the time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment. Must sit for PE at the first opportunity.



Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Successful completion of FE/EIT examination. Knowledge of modern methods and techniques of highway construction, highway maintenance, surveying and materials testing. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook or equivalent. Several years of both design and construction/field experience.



Other: Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program (or evaluated by NCEES as equivalent). Will be required to obtain and maintain various certifications such as soil & concrete testing. A valid driver's license is required. Overnight travel will be required on occasion. Must be able to report to work within 30 minutes of notification under normal conditions.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:




Knowledge of: principles and practices of engineering; modern methods and techniques of highway construction, maintenance and materials principles and practices of environmental engineering related to water supply systems, water pollution, air pollution, solid waste disposal and/or related environmental engineering services; federal and State laws and regulations.



Skill in: making engineering computations in designing difficult engineering projects and in making complete engineering plans; written and oral communications; mathematics; computer programs to communicate, record, and analyze information related to work; organization and record keeping; and engineering problem-solving related to heavy highway construction.



Ability to: apply and interpret federal and State laws and regulations to specific engineering projects; communicate and connect effectively with State, federal, and municipal government employees, elected government officials, consulting engineers, owners/operators, supervisors, contractors, coworkers, and the general public; make decisions and take action to deal with engineering problems and situations within established regulation; read, interpret, and apply plans and related specifications; act in a professional manner in work and public situations; develop necessary professional relationships in order to be effective; manage multiple tasks and information effectively and accurately with attention to detail; work outdoors approximately 75% of the time in differing weather conditions typical of construction worksites; lift up to 60 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes.
