Under the direction of the Assistant Provost for Student Success, the Senior Advisor, International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) acts as an integral member of the Center for Student Academic Success with primary responsibility for advising international students and visiting faculty. The Senior Advisor coordinates operations related to ISSS and executes assignments from the Assistant Provost to further divisional and University goals. The Senior Advisor leads and manages international student services including providing expertise in federal regulations pertaining to F-1 and J-1 regulations, OPT, and preparation and review of immigration documents using the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), while also planning and delivering other educational support and programs for the benefit of both undergraduate and graduate international student populations. The Senior Advisor works closely with colleagues in the division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Spiegel Center, the Office of the Registrar, Enrollment Management, the Division of Student Life, as well as faculty to provide services to students.

Management of Departmental Operations Pertaining to International Students

  • Coordinate international student services including educational and support programs.
  • Facilitate International Student Orientation in collaboration with Student Programs, Leadership and Orientation, the School of Law, and Graduate Admissions.
  • Educate international students on areas related to their immigration status, preparation for study in US, work opportunities/taxes, and other related topics through personal advising and workshops.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with the divisions of Enrollment Management, Student Life and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to create strategic plans for the increase in international student recruitment and enrollment.
  • Manage the annual ISSS budget.
  • Issue the DS-2019, and other related documents to the international visiting scholars, in a timely manner.
  • Provide assistance to alternate responsible officers (ARO) when necessary, including training, resources, and consultation.
  • Supervise and lead the International Ambassador Program, recruitment, hiring, and staff supervision.

Programming

  • Create, facilitate, promote, and implement culturally themed programming for the University, including, but not limited to, events related to traditional theme weeks and months, international cultures, current affairs, co-curricular opportunities, and student employee training programs.
  • Oversee the International Ambassador program including program development and oversight as well as recruitment, hiring, and staff supervision
  • Lead the Global Scholars Programs for new undergraduate students, including program content and facilitation, in partnership with the Counseling Center.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Submit annual reports to the Department of State regarding sponsored programs and activities, while following established regulations.
  • Complete certification processes, when required, to maintain the University's status.
  • Provide on-going assessment of programming and service provision.
  • Work with the Assistant Provost, and the Vice President of Equity and Inclusion & CDO, on data related to international students' success and retention.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes to immigration policies and statuses.

Additional Functions

  • Serve as a member of the Center for Student Academic Success leadership team and provide academic support to international students as a member of the CSAS unit.
  • Advise and work closely with campus partners such as housing and residential life, dining and DEI, to ensure international students' needs are being met.
  • Work with other CSAS colleagues on divisional efforts including academic advisement and outreach.
  • Serve as the Academic Skill and Enrichment Program (ASEP) Advisor for first year students.
  • Work closely with Enrollment Management to recruit and enroll international students.
  • Recruit and supervise Graduate Assistants.
  • Represent ISSS and CSAS at University events, such as orientation, enrollment, and alumni events.
  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion issues, especially as they relate to the students and the wider campus community.
  • Serve as a resource for campus constituents working with, and advocating for, the needs of international students.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to strengthen expertise in immigration policies as well as topics of interest for international populations studying and teaching in the US.


Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in higher education or related field, including experience with advising students and student groups in some capacity.
  • Minimum two years of related experience in higher education setting working directly with international students and faculty, with direct responsibility for immigration and educational programming.
  • Demonstrated experience issuing immigration documents and SEVIS software to ensure immigration compliance.
  • Ability to mentor students from under-represented groups.
  • Excellent oral, written, and technology skills.
  • Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite, including intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Database management knowledge.
  • Strong understanding and demonstration of commitment to diversity issues related to higher education.
  • Cultural competency and experience with working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge and direct experience with visa requirements for F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations and SEVIS immigration system.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel, and work nights and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to meet federal regulatory requirements for professional practice as a Designated School Official or Responsible Officer, including U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident Status requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with leading ISSS efforts in higher education setting.
  • Professional and student staff supervision of at least 2 years.
  • Website editing experience.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Proficiency with more than one language.
