About the Department



A Research Analyst position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Alex Muir in the Ben May Department for Cancer Research at the University of Chicago. This position is ideal for a recent graduate in the sciences looking for research experience and technical skills prior to pursuing further graduate or medical training. The Ben May Department conducts cutting-edge research aimed at understanding the basic biology of cancer and leveraging this information to better care for cancer patients. The Department offers a collegial and collaborative environment featuring experts in a variety of diseases and experimental techniques. This makes the Department an ideal setting for recent graduates to work and learn about the breadth of modern cancer and biological research. The Muir lab studies the metabolism of pancreatic cancer - what nutrients pancreatic tumors consume and how they 'digest' these nutrients, with the goal of identifying key pathways that can be therapeutically targeted in pancreatic cancer patients. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.



Job Summary



The Muir lab studies the metabolism of pancreatic cancer - what nutrients pancreatic tumors consume and how they 'digest' these nutrients, with the goal of identifying key pathways that can be therapeutically targeted in pancreatic cancer patients. The Muir lab uses a variety of experimental techniques from metabolomics to CRISPR genetic screens to interrogate pancreatic cancer metabolism and identify these key metabolic targets.



Responsibilities



  • Order and organize laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment.


  • Use molecular biology tools to generate reagents for the lab.


  • Perform biochemical and genetic experiments on cultured cancer cells.


  • Perform pre-clinical studies targeting metabolic pathways in mice.


  • Interacting with Dr. Muir and laboratory staff to facilitate research.


  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.


  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.


  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.


  • Maintains recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Has general awareness in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field.


  • Performs other related work as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree in biological, biochemical, chemical, or related sciences.


  • Significant laboratory coursework.





Experience:



  • Experience with techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culture or animal studies.





Working Conditions



  • Standard laboratory environment will work with toxic and biohazardous materials.


  • Weekend/evening hours: as needed.
