Job Description:

Description

The Social Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for a full-time Instructional Professor who will teach in the program in the History of European Civilization and Jewish Civilization sequences. The appointment is renewable, and the initial three-year term begins September 1, 2024. Appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, and full Instructional Professor will be considered based on the candidate's experience.

The position involves teaching up to six quarter-length courses during the academic year. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in both the History of European Civilization sequence and the Jewish Civilization sequence in the College's Core. In the European Civilization sequence, the first quarter covers the period from Late Antiquity to ca. 1700 and the second quarter the period from the Enlightenment to the twentieth century; sections are capped at 19 students, and class meetings are discussion-based, using exclusively primary source readings. In the Jewish Civilization sequence, the first quarter covers Jewish intellectual, cultural, and political life from antiquity to ca. 1800 with a particular focus on the development of the classical rabbinic tradition and on Judaism's interactions with Christianity and Islam, while the second quarter foregrounds transformations of Judaism and Jewish culture in modernity, Jewish political and intellectual trajectories in the era of emancipation and after, and contemporary Jewish political and cultural life in the US and Israel. More detailed course descriptions for both sequences can be found at http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/civilizationstudies/.

The successful candidate will also be ready to participate in developing and refining Civilization syllabi if necessary and support the Faculty Director and Program Director in developing workshops, student research experiences, and opportunities for internships and professional placement.

The review of applications will begin on December 30, 2023, and continue until the position is filled or the search is closed.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University.

Qualifications

The position requires a Ph.D. in a social sciences or humanities area relevant to European history and Jewish Studies and is open to applicants who will have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. no later than August 31, 2024. Experience teaching relevant coursework at the college level is required.
