Serves as a lead to support the Office of Animal Resources (OAR) research activities at the Aquatic Animal Research Laboratory (AARL) in compliance with federal regulations and university policies. Responsibilities include manage daily operations in the AARL, support different aquatic animal life support systems to achieve optimal animal health and research goals, scheduling research activities, record keeping, and performing complex animal research support activities.
JOB DUTIES:
35% - Essential - Health Care and Research Support: Performs animal health care and routine maintenance procedures for aquatic laboratory animals. Manages environmental enrichment development for aquatic animals. Conducts project specific animal research procedures in compliance with approved animal use protocols and written standard operating procedures. Performs animal health care and various medical procedures under the direction of the attending veterinarian including breeding, egg production, quarantine, and disease surveillance program in aquatic animals. Reports current veterinary related issues within the facility to the attending veterinarian.
25% - Essential - Facility management:
Serves as the lead for the AARL facility and ensures compliance with animals research regulations, guidelines and facility SOPs. Provides training on animals research techniques and equipment. Coordinates activities and space utilization for the AARL.
20% - Essential - Business management: Maintains records of animal orders and animal health. Provides information for accounting reports and billing for animal care and maintenance. Maintains data entry for animal use records utilizing standard software. Coordinates the acquisition and delivery of all aquatic animals within the facility.
20% - Essential - Instruction and Training: Provide instruction and guidance for principal investigators, research staff, and animal care staff regarding technical procedures using various aquatic laboratory animal species. Provides training and oversight of student workers and temporary employees to ensure that procedures are followed. Evaluates, updates, and develops Standard Operating Procedures for the AARL. Confer with researchers to determine how projects and studies should be conducted.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education - Bachelor's Degree in animal husbandry, agriculture or a related field and work experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Work experience that is directly related to the area of employment may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Work Exp 1+ years
