About the Python Developer 

This is a Hybrid position located within commuting distance of Bethesda, Maryland. 

The Python Developer will be a key contributor to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences' (NIGMS) IT modernization project. This role focuses on developing and enhancing Python applications within the Azure Cloud environment to support various scientific and business processes at NIGMS. The Python Developer will work closely with project managers, stakeholders, and other IT professionals to ensure that applications are designed and implemented to meet the highest standards of performance, scalability, and security. This role involves leveraging Azure services and integrating DevSecOps practices to deliver high-quality software solutions that align with the project’s goals. 

As a Python Developer, you will be responsible for analyzing existing Python applications, identifying areas for improvement, and developing new applications as needed. You will participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirement gathering, design, coding, testing, and deployment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Python development, experience with Azure Cloud services, and a commitment to agile development practices. Your technical expertise and problem-solving skills will be essential in driving the success of the IT modernization project. 

The ideal candidate for the Python Developer position a will be a highly skilled and experienced professional specializing in Python development within the Azure Cloud environment. This role is integral to the IT modernization project, focusing on developing and enhancing Python applications to support various scientific and business processes. They will work closely with project managers, stakeholders, and other IT professionals to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing applications that align with project goals. 

Key Responsibilities Include: 

  • Develop and enhance Python applications within the Azure Cloud environment. 

  • Analyze existing Python applications to identify performance bottlenecks and areas for improvement. 

  • Design and implement new Python applications to meet project requirements and integrate with existing systems. 

  • Collaborate with project managers, stakeholders, and other team members to gather requirements and define application objectives. 

  • Utilize Azure services such as Azure App Services, Azure Functions, and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) in application development. 

  • Implement best practices in coding, security, and application architecture to ensure high-quality software development. 

  • Participate in Scrum Agile processes, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives. 

  • Integrate DevSecOps practices into the development lifecycle to ensure secure and efficient application deployments. 

  • Conduct thorough unit and integration testing to ensure the reliability and performance of developed applications. 

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers as needed. 

  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for developed applications and systems. 

What you bring to the table: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred. 

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Python development, with a strong focus on application design and architecture. 

  • Proven experience with Azure Cloud services, including Azure App Services, Azure Functions, and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). 

  • Extensive knowledge of Python frameworks such as Django or Flask. 

  • Strong understanding of software development best practices, including design patterns, coding standards, and secure coding practices. 

  • Experience with Scrum Agile methodologies and DevSecOps practices. 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex requirements and develop effective solutions. 

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. 

  • Experience with database technologies such as SQL Server and Azure SQL Database. 

  • Knowledge of data visualization tools like Power BI and Tableau is a plus. 

  • Ability to pass an NIH background check and obtain a Public Trust – Moderate clearance. 

BCT offers a competitive total compensation package that, for this position includes a base annual salary target of $120,000 (based on qualifications), along with a generous benefits package.  BCT’s benefits include heavily subsidized medical, dental and vision coverage, fully vested 401k plan with company match, company paid life and disability insurance plans, a strong work-life balance/time-off structure.
