Job Description:

Performs all necessary technical and physical functions needed to operate and maintain the components and equipment of the treatment plant with guidance from the Treatment Plant Lead Operator and/or Treatment Manager.

The salary range for this position is $24.96- $37.45 per hour with a hiring range of $24.96 - $31.20 for Plant Operator A and a salary range $21.00 - $30.63 per hour with a hiring range of $21.11 - $25.87 for Plant Operator B/C, depending on qualifications and experience. Position will close to applicants on: May 31, 2019 at 4:30 P.M. M.S.T.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Monitors parameters, flows and equipment.  Assists in using accepted methods to produce the highest quality product in an economical manner by adjusting flows, valves, feed settings and set points using collaboration with Operator in Responsible Charge.  Reacts to impending process problems in a timely and proper manner.  Assists personnel in meeting target parameter.  Performs and participates in all testing and sampling schedules with accepted techniques and at scheduled times.  Interprets test results with assistance of higher level personnel.  Trains employees in proper sampling and testing techniques.  Performs calculations based on test results.  Keeps all records of parameters and results up to date and neat.  Generates reports on energy usage or conservation, process parameters, and other subjects. Enters data into computer accurately and on time.  Records operational changes, observations and completed jobs daily.  Monitors treatment efficiencies and levels by performing and participating in all testing and sampling schedules with accepted techniques and at scheduled times.  Maintains cleanliness in laboratory.  Performs maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment. Assists maintenance or technical service personnel in grounds, building, or equipment maintenance. Participates in major equipment and process upkeep.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Maintains all applicable records and archives. May be designated as an Operator in Responsible (ORC) as defined by the state certification board.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

Thorough knowledge of methods, equipment and procedures used in water/wastewater analysis. Extensive knowledge of mathematics and regulatory standards relative to wastewater discharge limits. Ability to apply logic of the scientific methods to solve problems encountered in laboratory testing. Ability to assimilate and interpret scientific data as required for the methodologies utilized. Ability to effectively train laboratory and plant personnel in lab procedures and techniques orally and in writing. Ability to perform all sampling and testing procedures, such as turbidity, pH, settleometer, dissolved oxygen, etc.

Education and/or experience:

Plant Operator A: One (1) year of experience as a Treatment Plant Operator B in appropriate specialty area in a comparable position and jurisdiction required. Specialized training or education in treatment plant operation is desirable.

Plant Operator B: Specialized training or education in treatment plant operation is desirable. One (1) year of experience as a Treatment Plant Operator C in appropriate specialty area in a comparable position and jurisdiction required.

C Operator - Specialized training or education in treatment plant operation is desirable.  One (1) year of experience as a Treatment Plant Operator D in appropriate specialty area in a comparable position and jurisdiction required.

Licensure and/or certifications:

Plant Operator A: Must possess a Class A or equivalent Water Treatment Plant Operator's license. Must be able to obtain a Colorado Class A Water Treatment Plant Operator’s license within 30 days of hire.

Plant Operator B: Must possess a Colorado Class B Treatment Plant Operator's License in the appropriate specialty area; i.e., water or wastewater. 

C Operator - Must possess a Colorado Class C Treatment Plant Operator's License in the appropriate specialty area; i.e., water or wastewater.

Material and equipment directly used:

Telephone, two-way radio, personal computer equipment, calculator, safety equipment, laboratory equipment and instrumentation

Working conditions and physical requirements:

Work is performed in a standard laboratory and office environment that may involve climbing ladders, stairs and steps. and traversing catwalk.  Grating, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping and kneeling on a frequent basis, and working in confined spaces. Work may also require working outside in all weather conditions and at all times of the day. Work may involve coming into regular and sometimes long-term contact with bacteria and odorous, infectious and obnoxious material. Work may involve performing sampling calibration or equipment calibration/maintenance often in difficult areas. Strenuous physical work involving moving, positioning, pushing, pulling or manipulating objects up to 150 pounds occasionally and/or moving, positioning and carrying loads of up to 50 pounds upstairs and loading on four-foot high surfaces frequently. Ability to perform flow, dosage, loading and other applicable calculations manually. Manual dexterity is required to complete work tasks through safe and proper operation of power and hand tools. Ability to inspect and determine status of equipment and unit processes using audio, visual, aromatic and tactile indicators. Ability to use gas monitoring equipment, safety tripod and harness and any other required safety equipment for entering both high and low hazard confined spaces. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and supervisor. Ability to work unsupervised and alone on both day and night shifts. Ability to respond to audio alarms and phone calls. Ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays. Ability to participate in a scheduled on-call shift and respond to plant alarms at the plant at night in a reasonable time frame.
