Manager, TEX Truck Operations

Manage the operational assets of the Crop Nutrients TEX (Transportation Express) department with integrity to achieve key performance goals. Will focus on profitability of the TEX department. Will be responsible for managing the company drivers (4) and the 36 owner operator relationships.

Budgeting, Capital & Expense Management - 30%


  • Manage the TEX operational assets to include tractor trailers, ammonia trailers and all liquid trailers to achieve key performance goals. Will be responsible for monitoring, analyzing and improving all primary variables, asset utilization, cost per loaded mile, trailer cost per ton, owner operator scorecard, company driver scorecard, etc... impacting operating costs with a focus on profitability.

  • Prepares and manages budgeting process by partnering with Director of Transportation and other vested business units.

  • Tracks and manages fleet costs to determine most efficient fleet by entering costs/expenses timely in Ariba or similar type of tracking system keeping within budget

Strategy and Collaboration - 15%


  • Work with Director of TEX Transportation to develop strategic plans to increase TEX profitability and growth.

  • Participates in short-term and long-term discussions on personnel and capital improvements

  • Set priorities and develop a plan for capital improvements

  • Works closely with other TEX managers on equipment planning, acquisition and maintenance

  • Collaborate with CNBU

Systems and Processes - 10%

  • Implement best practice systems for TEX drivers and owner operators. Ensure haulers are trained on Products hauled, ELD systems, and DOT requirements and/or any other system used to effectively run the business. Provide training for drivers and owner operators and work with them to ensue effective implementation of all systems.

Owner Operator and Personnel Management - 30%


  • Responsible for recruiting, negotiating and maintaining the owner operator relationships (approx. 25-30) equating to $4.5 million in costs.

  • Geographically position Owner Operators to maximize loads and revenue.

  • Provides leadership and direction for drivers and direct reports, including performance management, development opportunities and quarterly feedback/reviews.

Compliance and Safety - 15%

  • Promote and monitor employee and owner operator safety by taking proactive steps to create a positive safety culture. Ensure compliance with safety programs and protocols for drivers, owner operators, and fleet equipment including federal, state and local regulations; including but not limited to OSHA, EH&S, HR, DOT and Hazmat record maintenance and compliance.

Job Scope: Budget, Revenue, Sales Volume, etc.

Manages all operating costs to ensure all regulatory compliance is in place and is responsible for effective communication and coordination. Will have four direct reports and manage a budget of $16 million.

Required Education/Experience/Knowledge/Qualifications (to be able to perform this job):

Minimum Education and/or Experience -

Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Transportation or Engineering or related degree with 5+years of relevant work experience, specifically in transportation and logistics.

Other skills: Language, Math, Reasoning Ability, Computer skills, Management and Interpersonal skills. Leadership

Prefer Ag-related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in process improvement preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Current driver's license; driving record must meet company/insurance guidelines.

Other Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications - Strong and effective communication and organizational skills are essential. Must be able to multitask with several projects occurring at the same time.

Essential Functions: Physical demands, Work environment, etc.: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, as well as talk and hear. The employee is required to sit, sometimes for long periods of time, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk and drive for long periods. Must be able to tolerate and endure long working hours during peak busy seasons and maintain alertness. Will require periodic travel to customers, suppliers, and various fertilizer terminals. Normal office environment. The noise level in the work place is low. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions while traveling.
