The Office of Medical Education has an opening for one (1) Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) Assistant Director - Children's Hospital - Advocacy at 0.1 FTE (salary support plus benefits, up to the educational salary cap of $200,000).

Supervision Received:

    This position falls under the leadership of Office of Medical Education in the Dean's Office of the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU SOM) and reports directly to the Assistant Dean of Medical Education, Director of the Clerkship Curriculum.

Position Emphasis:


The Office of Medical Education (OME) with the University of Colorado's School of Medicine (SOM) is searching for an Assistant LIC Directors for the CHCO Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC). Candidates must be able to be obtain a faculty appointment at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and applicants must be a board-certified physician with an MD or DO degree from an accredited University. This is an atwill position and will be available at a 0.1 FTE (salary support plus benefits) equivalent. Positions will be named as soon as an appropriate candidate(s) is identified and with funding to begin as soon as named.

A longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) was created based on three foundational characteristics of an effective, core clinical educational environment:

(1) Student participation in comprehensive care of patients over time

(2) Presence of a continuous, learning relationship with those patients' clinicians

(3) Meeting core clinical competencies in an ongoing, continuous fashion

The School of Medicine's Office of Medical Education has transitioned to an LIC model, as part of a larger scale full curriculum overhaul. Core clinical education occurs in a longitudinal, integrated fashion primarily in an outpatient setting, with targeted hospital-based training called immersions placed during the core clinical year (generally occurring during the 2nd year of medical school, known as "Foothills"). Core competencies will be taught encompassing care of adults, children, and pregnant patients and are taught by providers representing the disciplines of family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, surgery and emergency medicine.

In the CHCO LIC, students will be placed at the Children's Hospital clinical sites as their primary site of learning. Twelve students will be placed in the CHCO LIC. The mission of the CHCO LIC is focus on child advocacy. The Assistant LIC Director will work alongside the LIC Director to directly oversee the clerkship experience for the students participating in the CHCO LIC.


Examples of Work Performed:


Support the LIC Director in the following roles:
  • Oversee the clinical and educational experience of enrolled students
  • Collaborate with LIC directors, liaisons, and coordinators at University Hospital, Children's Hospital Colorado, the Community Health LIC and the Rocky Mountain VA to oversee scheduling of clinical experiences
  • Collaborate with the other LIC directors and clinical liaisons to oversee the delivery of the core clinical didactic curriculum
  • Collaborate in the delivery of the CHCO Advocacy curriculum
  • Facilitate/teach learning seminars
  • Meet quarterly with students to review progress and feedback, develop individualized learning goals, support career exploration, and provide individualized advising
  • Ensure an optimal learning environment for students and collaborate with Clinical Content Directors to ensure students are achieving specialty objectives, competencies, conditions
  • Monitor student progress toward achievement of entrustable professional activities (EPAs)
  • Directly oversee student remediation with support of CCD, OME, OSL
  • Oversee course evaluation
  • Supervise/manage coordinator support of LIC program
  • Improve the LIC as informed by course evaluation
  • In collaboration with the other LIC Directors, assist the Clinical Skills director with the development and implementation of pre-LIC orientation (known as "basecamp")


General expectations:

  • All LIC directors are expected to be involved in direct student teaching as an LIC preceptor in their own LIC program
  • Participation in and attendance at regularly scheduled meetings


Salary and Benefits:


The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $10,000 - $20,000 salary support plus benefits, up to the educational salary cap of $200,000
