Purpose of Role


This Electromechanical Design Engineer role is responsible for the design and development of products to improve our customer•s supply chain efficiencies through marrying material handling equipment, automation and technology components together as an integrated system. This role works collaboratively with Sales, Category Management, New Product Development, External Suppliers and Operations to ensure the successful development and launch of new systems 0-2 years out.



Areas of Accountabilities

  • Interact with Sales and NPD teams to lead field investigations to assist in opportunity identification and clarify design requirements throughout the NPD process. Serve as one of RPC•s subject matter experts in Mechanical Systems by providing equipment recommendations, potential suppliers and pricing, installation, networking requirements, etc.

  • Collaborate with the Material Handling and Technology Teams to analyze complex supply chain challenges and rapidly conceptualize, design, prototype and test potential solutions. Solutions include the integration of machine learning, vision object recognition and related software/hardware technology into material handling equipment such as wrappers, conveyors and automation equipment.

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of automated solutions and control stations on a test center scale including the planning and execution of comprehensive validation testing in preparation for implementation at customer sites.

  • Utilize design requirements to create automation and machine designs including 3D models, drawings, wiring, programming, safety features, and component sourcing. Proactively troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues and seek out areas for improvement.

  • Develop and conduct product validation tests to drive design iterations and the development of a robust launch products.

  • Complete product revisions through the Engineering Change Request process based on Development, Customer and/or Supplier feedback.

  • Support Operations with the development of new manufacturing and production capabilities along with the expansion of domestic and international supplier network.

  • Demonstrate a fluent understanding of and consistent adherence to Rehrig Pacific's phase gate process, New Product Development SOPs and practices.

  • Ensure the retention of internal knowledge through documentation in the Design Body of Knowledge (DBOK), following document control procedures and supporting the development of other designers.



Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electromechanical, Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 4 years of experience developing, testing and integrating related products with proven results.

  • Possess an intimate understanding of material handling and automation industries including trends, customers, competitors, applications, and current solutions.

  • Thorough understanding of material handling and automation equipment systems, mechanical and electrical design, hardware selection, manufacturing and integration. Equipment systems can include conveyors, stackers, destackers, turntables, and wrappers.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand, analyze and problem solve complex supply chains conceptually and analytically to develop value added solutions.

  • Hands on experience in the rapid creation and testing of prototypes to validate the effectiveness of concepts and determine design direction.

  • Thorough understanding of sensors, robotics, complex mechanical designs and various controls along with experience specifying hardware and software options for automation systems.

  • Hands on experience with integrating sensors and electronics in both mobile and permanent structures including RFID, camera and related sensors along with communications systems such as Bluetooth, WIFI and cellular.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with an eagerness to perform hands on activities from concept through customer installation.

  • High level of self-initiative with the demonstrated ability to develop, manage, and lead multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Proven team leadership experience working collaboratively both vertically and horizontally throughout an organization.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to quickly build rapport with others.

  • In depth knowledge of a typical new product development process such as phase gate.

  • Familiar with mechanical and electrical safety requirements and regulations.

  • Familiar with 3D CAD modeling and engineering analysis tools.


The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Rehrig Pacific, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $90,000 - $115,000.
