Architectural Planning Manager

The Architectural Planning Manager leads a team of architectural planning Senior Specialists as well as multiple outside A&E consultants in the work of; defining the program, communicating project specific scope by using Best Buy’s floor plan standards and prototype design building criteria to create site specific merchandise and fixture layouts along with construction and contract documents and building specifications. The documents are used to communicate internally with business and retail leaders as well as externally with landlords and local AHJs, in bidding construction trades, and culminates with the securing of any necessary permits and partner teams being able to seamlessly, deploy and close out all site specific physical BBY store project work. The team is responsible for maintaining related support documentation/standards related to architectural/MEP/structural documentation, and specifications as well as with maintaining as-built documents and asset tracking for BBY’s portfolio of locations.

To be successful, the individual will need to possess a strong mentality that drives the facilitation and maximization of ongoing business growth across Best Buy’s real estate portfolio. This role collaborates across multiple stakeholders translating design directives and merchant strategy into prototype and then site-specific solutions that provide the best value for the overall project. Exceptional leadership and engagement skills, attention to detail, and an ability to simplify process and drive effective execution in a multi-format, multiple location roll out are requirements for this position.

This role is hybrid, which means you will work some days on site at a Best Buy location and some days virtually from home or other non-Best Buy location. The specific work arrangements vary by role and team. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process.

What you’ll do

Architectural Planning:


  • Drives strategy and accountability toward budget and critical timeline milestones across multiple locations.

  • Understands requirements for development and documentation of building projects, technical details, and unique code and/or lease requirements, and pushes the team in creative ways where necessary to define solutions that meet the needs of the business and these requirements.

  • Partners continually utilizing a service mindset with the construction and deployment teams looking for opportunities to reduce project costs and schedules and improve the quality of the teams output.

  • Nurture and develop relationships and communication clearly and on time expectations around work with key business partners such as Real Estate, Environmental Design, SEPM, GNFR, Construction, Deployment, Legal, finance, and Contract Management teams.

  • Identifies, qualifies, and quantifies/prioritizes and communicates risks to leadership.

P&L Management with additional focus on annual budget capital/expense value targeting:

  • Annual score carding of all consultants, trades and vendors with a >$1million book of business with the Enterprise.

  • All projects in store experience with >$100k and <$500K of expense/capital to require a minimum 2 quotes/bids per project; All projects in store experience with >$500K require a minimum 3 quotes/bids per project.

  • Develops and manages to IER budget for multiple consultant contracts/trades across each project.

  • Plays a key role in the development and value targeting of business/investment plans that affect the Store Experience function and works with the Store Experience leadership team to ensure plans support the achievement of company objectives and strategy while maintaining the strategy and integrity of the overall Store Experience.

  • Evaluates and makes available timely and accurate analyses of budgets, project proposals, project completions and use learnings from each project to enhance future executions.

Enterprise Approach for Architectural Planning:

  • Drives an Enterprise approach in shared design documentation, material specifications, construction methodology, and approach to architecture providing leadership, and best practices.

  • Maximizes material specifications for durability and value and looks for opportunities to leverage purchasing.

  • Works collaboratively with local country stakeholders on advancing quality improvement and priorities that support our collective strategy.

  • Represents Best Buy externally to vendors, partners and industry leaders.

Leadership and People Development

  • Drives development planning, identifies or creates opportunities, and maintains accountability for team members around their plans.

  • Provide regular feedback to direct reports concerning their performance and progress against their career and business objectives.

  • Manage and mentors a growing team to ensure high-quality work.

  • Create a supportive team environment that stresses the importance of collaboration and team learning, including professional growth from successes and failures.

Basic Requirements

  • 5 or more years of design, planning, architectural, or engineering leadership, deploying design and production of design elements/materials while working with cross functional groups.

  • 5 or more years of deploying negotiating strategies, terms and funding strategies and techniques.

  • 5 or more years of retail experience, working with cross functional store leadership and delivering solutions to improve /fuel overall customer experience, customer retention and customer growth.

  • 3 or more years Demonstrated ability to build & develop functional teams.

Preferred Experience

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent relevant professional experience

  • 7 or more years of relevant professional experience

  • Hands-on Field experience
